Magnetic Monopoles as the Highest Energy Cosmic Ray Primaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
We suggest that the highest energy > ∼ 10eV cosmic ray primaries may be relativistic magnetic monopoles. Motivations for this hypothesis are that conventional primaries are problematic, while monopoles are naturally accelerated to E ∼ 10eV by galactic magnetic fields. By matching the cosmic monopole production mechanism to the observed highest energy cosmic ray flux we estimate the monopole mass to be ∼ 10GeV .

Particle Physics Explanations for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Events
The origin of cosmic ray events with E ∼ 10 11 GeV remains mysterious. In this talk I briefly summarize several proposed particle physics explanations: a breakdown of Lorentz invariance, the “Z−burst” scenario, new hadrons with masses of several GeV as primaries, and magnetic monopoles with mass below 10 GeV as primaries. I then describe in a little more detail the idea that these events are du...
متن کاملAre High Energy Cosmic Rays Magnetic Monopoles?
We argue that magnetic monopoles can not be associated to the highest energy cosmic rays as recently suggested. Both the observed spectrum and the arrival direction disagree with observation.
متن کاملUltrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays from Topological Defects — Cosmic Strings, Monopoles, Necklaces, and All That
The topological defect scenario of origin of the observed highest energy cosmic rays is reviewed. Under a variety of circumstances, topological defects formed in the early Universe can be sources of very massive particles in the Universe today. The decay products of these massive particles may be responsible for the observed highest energy cosmic ray particles above 10 20 eV. Some massive parti...
متن کاملLongevity and Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays
It is proposed that the highest energy ∼ 1020eV cosmic ray primaries are protons, decay products of a long-lived progenitor which has propagated from typically ∼ 100Mpc. Such a scenario can occur in e.g. SU(15) grand unification and in some preon models, but is more generic; if true, these unusual cosmic rays provide a window into new physics. Typeset using REVTEX
متن کاملImplications of a possible clustering of highest-energy cosmic rays.
Recently, a possible clustering of a subset of observed ultra-high energy cosmic rays above approximately 40 EeV (4 x 10(19) eV) in pairs near the supergalactic plane was reported. We show that a confirmation of this effect would provide information on the origin and nature of these events and, in case of charged primaries, imply interesting constraints on the extragalactic magnetic field. Poss...
